Veterans' Affairs Disability
American citizens who choose to dedicate their careers to serving their nation deserve to retire in happiness and peace. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. Members of the armed forces, whose jobs place them in exceedingly dangerous conditions on a regular basis, often develop permanent or long-lasting disabilities due to injuries sustained in the line of duty.
The knowledgeable Indianapolis veterans' affairs (VA) disability attorneys at the Charles D. Hankey Law Office have the experience to help you successfully file for VA disability benefits.
How Veterans' Affairs Disability Works
The Office of Veterans' Affairs uses a different kind of system than Social Security for determining who is eligible for benefits and how much they will receive. Under the VA system, anyone suffering from a chronic illness or injury that was caused or exacerbated by combat can file for benefits.
If you apply for VA disability benefits, the government will review your case and give your injury a ranking on a scale of 0 to 100, based on how severely the injury will affect your earning potential. For example, a scar that does not impair any abilities will probably receive a ranking of 0, while a terminal illness may receive a ranking of 100.
The amount of payment you receive will depend on your injury's ranking. It may also be increased for other reasons, such as any dependents in your household, or if your injury worsens over time. Likewise, you may see a decrease in payments if your condition begins to improve.
