Veteran Disability Compensation
Military veterans frequently experience service-related disabilities that can qualify them for monthly disability payments. The benefits are paid to veterans who have suffered injuries or diseases that happened while on active duty or were made worse by active military service. In addition to individuals who were injured on active duty, those that were injured or disabled from VA health care are also eligible.
The benefits paid to a veteran vary from $123 to over $3,100 per month. The variation in disability compensation is frequently due to the level of disability and the number of dependents. Individuals may be eligible to additional amounts if they:
- Have very severe disability or the loss of limbs
- Have a spouse, children, or dependent parents
- Have a seriously disabled spouse
To apply for disability compensation, a veteran must fill out VA Form 21-526, the Veterans Application for Compensation or Pension. If a person has records that establish dependency of individuals and have medical evidence like doctor and hospital records, they should be attached to the application and submitted at the same time, just to make the process easier.
In the event that an individual must travel to get to a VA office or a treatment facility, there is mileage related reimbursement available. This is available to individuals that:
- Have service-connected disabilities rated at 30% or more
- Must travel for treatment of a service-connected condition
- Are receiving a VA pension
- Are travelling for scheduled compensation of pension examinations
- Have income of less than the maximum VA pension rate
