Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income, commonly abbreviated to SSI, is a service from Social Security that provides financial assistance to low-income people who are retired, blind, or otherwise disabled. It is designed to provide supplemental help whatever benefits qualified people are already eligible for. If you fit into one of those categories, and you are still struggling to make ends meet, Supplemental Security Income can help you live a more independent life.

Who Is Eligible?

In order to quality for Supplemental Security Income, you have to meet certain income requirements. Since SSI is only supposed to be available to people with legitimate financial need, you will need to prove that your income and assets are below the maximum allowable income. The definition of income used by social Security is a relatively wide one: it includes wages, retirement, pensions, and food and shelter.

There are also many sources of income that Social Security does not count in making its decision, however. For example: the first $20 of most sources of income in general, the first $65 of money you earn from work, and half of your income over that $65 can all be exempt from their calculations. Food stamps, shelter from nonprofit organizations, and most home energy assistance can also be excluded, making it easier for people who receive food stamps and housing aid to quality for SSI.

Bear in mind that, in addition to your income, the limit for your income often depends on exactly where you live. There are also other exceptions and technicalities that are easily overlooked, but which a lawyer can find. No matter what your situation, an Indianapolis lawyer can help you get the most out of your application.
